Description
Ice roads are a common type of transportation corridor in regions of the circumpolar north. They traverse frozen rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. Every winter, the varied combination of weather, hydrology, and other factors can form ice roads. Experience has shown that ice roads and crossing routes vary from winter to winter and often require travelers to make constant adjustments to routes along rivers. This inherent variability in both ice and river characteristics results in one of the most challenging environments for maintaining a transportation corridor. This project developed a pocket guide to capture generational knowledge of ice and river hydraulic science and allow this knowledge to be more widely accessible.
