Description
This research project will assess Federal Lands Management Agencies’ (FLMAs) transportation asset data collection, storage, and level of usefulness of current data to provide recommendations for standardizing data collection methods across FLMA partners. Geospatial analysis is one approach for obtaining data associated with safety risk factors, such as horizontal curve radius, vertical grades, and approximate embankment slopes and heights. Improving geospatial analysis tools can provide benefits beyond safety, such as improving the accuracy of construction quantities for projects and lead to improved accuracy of contracts.
Limited data availability is a challenge for FMLAs to successfully design a road. Most of these roads are in sparsely populated remote areas and have low traffic volume, difficult terrain, challenging design requirements, significant wildlife impacts, and rigid environmental limitations. The lack of accurate asset data makes it challenging to perform proactive, risk-based safety analyses.
