Automated Driving Systems (ADS) on Rural Roads
Status
Not Started.
Description
Rural roads are critically understudied for ADS purposes, but this research is invaluable for FLMAs to understand potential impacts, challenges, and opportunities presented by introducing ADS technology on public lands. Partnerships between academic, private ADS researchers and FLMAs offer a unique opportunity to study ADS technology in rural settings. This project will consider ADS interactions with local fauna and flora, while also accounting for other roadway variables in rural public land areas (interactions with trails, pedestrians on road edges, and slow-moving or irregular stopped vehicles). The project will identify testing areas within FLMAs unit’s diverse roadway topographies, climates, and environments.
