Pg 29-61: PedSafe Countermeasures San FransicoPhase 2 Final Report
This chapter discusses the full deployment of countermeasures for a pedestrian safety countermeasures program in San Francisco. Data collection and evaluation were conducted at selected Intersection: In-Street Pedestrian Crossing Signs, “Turning Traffic Must Yield To Pedestrians" Signs, "LOOK" Pavement stencils, Modified Signal Timing, Pedestrian Head Starts, Advanced stop lines and red visibility curb zones, flashing beacons, Portable Changeable Message Speed Limit Signs, ADA Curb Ramp, median refuge islands, Automated video detection of pedestrians to adjust signal timing, Changeable Message Speed Limit signs, retroreflective materials, and education.

Abstract:This report presents the methods and key findings from San Francisco PedSafe, a comprehensive pedestrian safety planning and engineering project. It is one of three such projects in the nation funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to evaluate:
In Phase I: The effectiveness of a pedestrian safety plan targeted to higher-injury areas;
In Phase II: The implementation of a range of mostly low-to-moderate-cost, innovative safety improvements.
This report concentrates on the Phase II countermeasure implementation efforts, minimizing duplication with earlier reports, and focusing primarily on the implementation experience and overall lessons learned.
