STEP — STEM Lessons

To help children, tweens and young adults take a step closer to science and math, FHWA's STEP program developed five STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) lessons. The lessons are for K-8th grade students and emphasize roadway design and pedestrian safety. Lessons include calculations for older students, real-world examples of the key concepts, and hands-on activities including building mock streetscapes. People with experience in the transportation or a related field are well-suited instructors. The lessons are designed for in-classroom, afterschool events, and smaller group activities. Each STEM lesson is an easy to follow format with step-by-step instructions, lists of suggested materials, and visual aids. The Primer describes key concepts in an accessible manner so that anyone can use the materials and become familiar with the why and how of these concepts.
