Abstract:This is the fifth biennial Benchmarking Project which began in 2003. Researchers analyzed data from the 50 States and from 50 large and 18 small and midsized U.S. cities to document trends in bicycling and walking. This report uses case studies from around the U.S. to illustrate efforts taken to support bicycling and walking. This 2016 edition has been reformatted from previous editions. The report starts with a review of research showing the impact of biking and walking projects, next, state and city level statistics are presented, and finally, a tool box section provides resources for readers to collect and compare data on bicycling and walking in their area. Topics include: active transportation and health, safety, economic impacts, infrastructure, legislation and regulation, funding, and public opinion.
