Implementing the SHSP

These resources can help those States that are in the process of implementing or updating their SHSPs:

  • SHSP IPM – The Essential Eight – Fundamental Elements and Effective Steps for SHSP – To assist States with implementing their SHSPs, FHWA and its partners NHTSA and FMCSA researched noteworthy practices and incorporated them into an SHSP Implementation Process Model (IPM). The IPM is an implementation guide based on research, the experiences of 6 “model” States, feedback from 10 “pilot” States, a panel review by related organizations, and the knowledge and experiences of subject matter experts.
  • SHSP Implementation Process Model Interactive CD – This interactive version of the SHSP IPM – The Essential Eight – Fundamental Elements and Effective Steps for SHSP is designed to be both interactive and intuitive, allowing the user to either go to the various sections of the Implementation Process Model and Case Study Supplement or download PDF versions of the IPM, Case Study Supplement, or checklists and key strategies.
  • SHSP IPM Supplement Number 1 – Case Studies – While this document can be used as a stand-alone reference for noteworthy practices related to Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) implementation, it is designed primarily as a companion document to The Essential Eight – Fundamental Elements and Effective Steps for SHSP Implementation. The case studies are organized according to which IPM chapter they most closely relate and the individual chapters within both documents are identified by their matching color tabs.
