The Proven Safety Countermeasures is a FHWA initiative to promote the implementation of nine countermeasures that have shown promise in improving safety in the areas of intersections, pedestrians, and roadway departure. These countermeasures were selected based on proven, reliable research that demonstrates their effectiveness or cost-effectiveness. The following countermeasures are included:
- Roundabouts.
- Corridor Access Management.
- Traffic Signal Backplates with Retroreflective Borders.
- Longitudinal Rumble Strips and Stripes on Two-Lane Roads.
- Enhanced Delineation and Friction for Horizontal Curves.
- Safety Edge.
- Medians and Pedestrian Crossing Islands in Urban and Suburban Areas.
- Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons.
- Road Diets.
A website and downloadable fact sheet is provided for each countermeasure. FHWA encourages State and local agencies to consider the use of these specific countermeasures when applicable due to their reliability, potential for wider application, and demonstrated effectiveness.
