A Champion's Guidebook to Saving Lives

Description:

This information guide provides novice and experienced safety practitioners with information and guidance for developing and managing successful SHSPs. An SHSP is a data-driven, multidisciplinary plan addressing the most prominent highway safety concerns in a State. The guide encompasses all aspects of the SHSP process including development, implementation, updates, and evaluation.

SHSPs are successful when they have one or more champions, strong leadership, and a defined organizational structure supported by safety stakeholders and partners. The guide provides advice for developing an organizational structure for an SHSP and promoting collaboration and communication between all partners.

Strategic goals and objectives addressing behavioral and infrastructure-related issues are an important component of SHSPs. The guide provides recommendations for creating achievable and measurable goals pertinent to each emphasis area in the plan. Managers, champions, or other stakeholders implement strategies and measure progress toward reaching these goals using performance measures and other data.

The guide includes checklists relating to each part of the SHSP process that readers can use to evaluate an SHSP against common standards and identify critical content needed in an SHSP.
