Work Zone Safety Performance Measures for Virginia

Description:

This information guide documents Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) research to develop and refine work zone safety performance measures based on fatal and serious injuries in work zones (without exposure measures). VDOT combined information from the statewide crash database and the traffic information management system to integrate crash data, work zones, weather conditions, and other data.

The guide discusses the available data, desired measures, and how the agency can effectively use available data to accurately measure work zone safety. The guide also discusses challenges and limitations of existing data and systems that diminish the ability to develop ideal rate-based performance measures.
