Spatial Database for Intersections

Description:

Intersection safety improvement decisions require a comprehensive intersection inventory and related information. The Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) at the University of Kentucky developed a methodology to create and maintain a full inventory of every intersection in the state. This guide describes the process to create a full inventory of intersections with geometric and operational attributes, categorize intersections, and develop safety performance functions (SPFs) for use in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The background information and methodology could be adapted and employed for similar efforts in other states and municipalities.
