Roadway Data Improvement Program: Supplemental Information Resource

Description:

This document provides an overview of data collection methods, data management practices, use of roadway data in transportation planning, and using roadway data for safety analysis. The intent is to supplement the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Roadway Data Improvement Program (RDIP) with comprehensive documentation and information about available resources and programs. The document has been developed through a review of current and emerging roadway data practices and input from a Technical Working Group. The audience is any State or local highway agency responsible for roadway and traffic data. The following topics are discussed in detail:

  • An introduction to the FHWA RDIP.
  • Roadway safety data, roadway asset data, and available roadway datasets and data systems.
  • Transportation planning and relevant programs that use roadway data.
  • Data management techniques.
