The purpose of this information source is to summarize perspectives of the project team and the State representatives that participated in the Roadway Safety Data Capabilities Assessment and Peer Exchange on the FHWA Roadway Safety Data Program. It offers input on the roles FHWA could play in improving state and local safety data systems and safety analysis capabilities.
The document is organized into four goal areas: data collection, data analysis, data management, and data expansion. The data collection goal covers completeness, timeliness, accuracy, and uniformity/consistency. The data analysis goal covers network screening, diagnosis, countermeasure selection, evaluation, and accessibility. The data management goal covers policies, procedures, and personnel. Finally, the data expansion goal covers how roadway safety data relates to other data including, but not limited to, crash data and roadway data. For each goal area and proposed action item, the document includes discussion on motivation, priority, delivery methods, and recommendations.
