This information guide explains a performance-based highway geometric design process in which design is based on the explicit consideration of operational and safety performance measures. Since the publication of the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual (HSM) in 2010, geometric design has become increasingly performance based. The guide discusses how quantitative, performance-based safety analysis fits within a larger performance-based geometric design process.
