This report documents a series of research efforts by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) and research the feasibility of implementing such an inventory, specifically at State DOTs, through the development of a MIRE Management Information System (MIRE MIS). MIRE is intended to be a model inventory of data to conduct advanced safety analysis with current and future tools, and the MIRE MIS is intended to be a model data management structure used for managing and maintaining the inventory. The progression of several FHWA research projects and resulting reports is reviewed in this brief. The following FHWA publications are addressed:
- Model Inventory of Roadway Elements, Version 1.0.
- MIRE Element Collection Mechanisms and Gap Analysis.
- MIRE MIS Lead Agency Data Collection Report.
- Exploration of the Application of Collective Information to Transportation Data for Safety White Paper.
- MIRE Data Collection Guidebook.
- Development of a Structure for a MIRE Management Information System.
- Performance Measures for Roadway Inventory Data.
