Description:

This information guide provides a process and recommended strategies for integrating safety data among State, Tribal, and local agencies. Data integration efforts are categorized by integration across jurisdictions and integration among safety databases. The guide discusses the benefits of data integration and the steps necessary to achieve successful data integration, including background information about safety data, safety data management, and the types of data that agencies should integrate. The guide presents the following nine-step process to achieve data integration.

  1. Lay the foundation.
  2. Conduct gap analysis.
  3. Establish data governance process.
  4. Develop data collection and integration plan.
  5. Identify training needs.
  6. Perform data integration.
  7. Develop and deploy the extract, transform, and load process.
  8. Conduct analyses.
  9. Perform effectiveness evaluation.

The guide also includes reports from three pilot studies where agencies used the guide’s data integration process, as well as example data sharing agreements and memorandums of understanding that agencies can use or adapt to foster data sharing relationships in their jurisdiction.
