The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) conducted a capabilities assessment for each state in terms of the collection, management, and use of roadway safety data to better understand the current status of state safety data systems. This project is part of the Roadway Safety Data Program (RSDP). This report documents the effort and provides an overview of findings based on the assessment of fifty states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It provides both a benchmark of current safety data capabilities and an action plan for enhancing safety data capabilities to better support the decision-making process. Note that this report is focused on the status of safety data systems at the national level and does not provide specific details related to any individual States. Each state has received an individual assessment report that describes their capabilities and opportunities for enhancement.
