CODES Program Transition and Promising Practices

Description:

This information guide provides a background and history of the Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) Program from development to current use. CODES originated in the early 1990s as a means of examining the benefits of seatbelt and motorcycle helmet use in crashes. NHTSA worked with grantee States to enhance and institutionalize the program. In the late 2000s, CODES management and responsibility was transferred to the State-level. The guide presents summaries of a number of recent projects to expand upon prior analyses, collaborate with other agencies, and initiate new research since the transition to States. The promising practices are categorized in four broad objectives:

  1. Identify Traffic Safety Problems.
  2. Support Traffic Safety Decision Makers.
  3. Support Traffic Safety Legislation.
  4. Educate the Public.
