BIKESAFE Bicycle Countermeasure Selection System

Description:

The BIKESAFE Bicycle Countermeasure Selection System is a web-based system, which provides the user with a list of possible engineering, education, or enforcement treatments to improve bicycle safety and/or mobility based on user input about a specific location. Interactive matrices are provided to help the user identify applicable countermeasures without entering substantial data. The tool provides information in two categories: 1) resources, and 2) tools.

  1. Resources: The resources are informational pages providing an overview of the need to provide a more bicycle-friendly environment as well as an overview of the bicycle safety problem and related factors that must be understood before improvement. The resources section also provides information about bicycle crash statistics and analysis as well as selection and implementation of improvements.
  2. Tools: The tools allow the user to select appropriate countermeasures to address specific issues. The following are included in the tools section:
    • Selection Tool: This interactive tool allows the user to develop a list of potential treatments on the basis of site characteristics. The user completes a questionnaire regarding performance objectives, the type of safety problem or desired behavioral change, geometric features, and operating conditions.
    • Interactive Matrices: This tool shows the relationship between the countermeasures, crash types, and performance objectives.
    • Countermeasures: This tool provides details of 50 engineering, education, enforcement, and other treatments or programs for improving bicycle safety and mobility.
    • Case Studies: This tool provides real-world examples of implemented treatments.
