Types of Training
NHI trainings are tailored for transportation professionals at every stage of their careers. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned expert, courses are designed to grow your skills and knowledge—advancing infrastructure, safety, and innovation nationwide.
In addition to more than one hundred Instructor-Led Trainings (ILTs) taught by subject matter experts and industry leaders, NHI also offers hundreds of Web-Based Trainings (WBTs) accessible anytime through Blackboard. These flexible, self-paced modules are a convenient way to sharpen your skills and stay current on transportation topics—on your own schedule. FHWA employees are not required to pay for NHI trainings. Non-FHWA employees must be registered as public seat participants, which include non-FHWA employees in both the public and private sectors.
Choose the training format that fits your learning style and schedule:
In-person classroom instruction
ILTs bring instructors and participants together in a traditional classroom setting. In-person training offers valuable benefits such as real-time feedback from subject matter experts and peers, hands-on learning, enhanced engagement, and meaningful networking opportunities.
Live, online classroom instruction
Like an ILT, a VILT is guided by an instructor or facilitator, but takes place online in a virtual classroom accessible from any computer with an internet connection. While participants can join remotely, VILTs are scheduled at set times and feature live sections. These courses promote interactive learning and real-time engagement with instructors and peers.
Free and available 24/7
WBTs are free, self-paced professional development opportunities designed for flexible, individualized training. References can be accessed online at any time, and you can save your place in the training with the ability to revisit modules on an annual basis. A final exam may be required.
All technical trainings are hosted on the Blackboard Learning Management System, providing a user-friendly platform that supports learner growth, professional development, and skill-building to better serve communities nationwide.
Training Materials
NHI offers a variety of manuals, workbooks, practice worksheets, and guides designed to support continued learning. These materials are available to registered course participants in Blackboard and can be accessed in digital formats at the start of each section.
Partner-Supported Training Development
NHI Instructional Systems Designers collaborate with subject matter experts worldwide to develop high-quality, relevant courses that address the evolving needs of the transportation industry. These partnerships help ensure our training remains current, practical, hands-on, and aligned with real-world challenges to develop each learner’s overall experience.
