A Resident’s Guide for Creating Safer Communities for Walking and Biking

Description:

This guide will assist community members with getting involved in improving the safety for pedestrians and bicyclists in their communities.  Users will be able to identify common pedestrian and bicyclist safety concerns; engage others through partnerships to help solve the problems; determine effective solutions using engineering, education, enforcement, and outreach countermeasures; and get additional resources for more detailed information. The guide takes a pragmatic approach by realizing that in many cases improvements to pedestrian and bicycle safety start with residents in a community that can build support with other citizen stakeholders and partners.  In this sense, the guide is effective in explaining ways for people to work together in support of such a cause and also in identifying solutions to safety concerns. A number of success stories are also included in the guide to demonstrate how large and small communities have addressed pedestrian and bicycle safety concerns.

This guide is based on a previous publication titled A Resident’s Guide for Creating Safe and Walkable Communities.
