Description:

This application guide presents the pedestrian safety prediction methodology for urban signalized intersections as developed for inclusion in Chapter 12, Urban and Suburban Arterials, of the 1st Edition AASHTO Highway Safety Manual (HSM). This report is primarily for users to reference and better understand the development of the modeling database, safety performance functions, and crash modifications factors that are present in the HSM (since the details of the efforts to develop those tools are not presented in the HSM). The report also discusses various limitations and potential improvements to the methodology that could be realized with a broader data set and future research.
