This guide discusses the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB), a countermeasure that has shown promise in reducing severe pedestrian crashes at midblock crossings. The guide includes an overview of the basic operations and purpose of PHBs, information about their safety effectiveness, and a summary of MUTCD Provisions related to PHBs. A case study reviewing installation of PHBs along a corridor with a high number of pedestrian fatalities is also included.
