Local Roads Safety Resource CD Contents Are Organized by Topic Area

Whether you are a local road safety advocate, a practitioner, an elected official, or a community leader, you need information and tools to plan and implement roadway safety improvements.

The Local Roads Safety Resource CD provides quick and easy access to the latest information on local roads safety. Organized by topic area in one place, the CD provides guidance, tools, and other resources from government agencies and national associations on local roadway safety.

The CD's easy-to-use format and portability make it a vital resource for your agency's local roads safety resource library. The free CD may be ordered on line at http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/local_rural/training/resourcecd/.

The majority of highway fatalities take place on rural roads. In 2008, 56 percent of the 37,261 U.S. highway deaths occurred on rural roads, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. About 23 percent of the population lives in rural areas. The fatality rate for rural crashes is more than twice the fatality rate for urban crashes. System-wide, low-cost safety improvements are a very cost-effective approach to improving local and rural road safety.
