Mount Blue Sky Highway
Notice
Full SH 5 roadway closure including pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles at the U.S. Forest Service Welcome Station (north of SH5 and SH103 intersection) to the summit of Mount Blue Sky: September 3, 2024, through Spring of 2026. Intermittent delays could be encountered in late summer 2024 and in 2026 prior to and following full closure.
The Federal Highway Administration’s Central Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-CFLHD), in partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the City and County of Denver Mountain Parks (DMP), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are planning improvements to a segment of State Highway 5 (SH 5,) otherwise known as the Mount Blue Sky (previously Mount Evans) Scenic and Historic Byway. The purpose of the project is to repair and reconstruct approximately 0.7 miles of the roadway near the Summit Lake Parking Lot.
The Mount Blue Sky Highway is located within the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forest in Clear Creek County, CO. The project site is approximately 50 miles west of Denver, CO at an elevation of approximately 13,000 feet. The project will repair and reconstruct approximately 0.7 miles of the roadway near the Summit Lake Parking Lot. Repairs are needed because the underlying roadway material has settled, and natural drainage patterns need to be restored. The major work elements include reconstruction of the roadway, drainage improvements, construction of rock embankment, and placement of aggregate base and asphalt pavement.
