Big Pine Creek Bridge 6, Big Pine Creek Bridge 3, and Brush Creek Bridge 1 Repairs

Project Description

Work includes the replacement of the superstructure and piers for Big Pine Creek Bridge 3, the replacement of the superstructure for Brush Creek Bridge 1 and the replacement of the superstructure and pier for Big Pine Creek Bridge 6. The existing bridges were built in 1936 1938, and, at 80 years of age, have reached the end of their lifespan. The superstructure for every bridge will be replaced with precast concrete box beams. The existing stone masonry abutments are historic and will remain in place (new micropiles will be installed at each abutment to support the structures). The existing piers will be replaced with a single concrete pier at each bridge and will be faced with stone masonry reusing existing historic stone. The bridge rail will be replaced to comply with current safety standards. Riprap will be installed as needed at abutments and pier footings to eliminate or prevent scour. The asphalt roadway approaches to the bridges will be reconstructed. The project can be accessed from the north from NC Highway 18 and from the south by US Route 21. Road will be closed to traffic during the construction and the traffic will be detoured onto alternate routes.
