Shields River Road Surface Improvement
Background:
This project is located in Custer Gallatin National Forest (CGNF). It was selected from the 2021 Montana Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) Call for Projects. The project will improve access to the areas served by Shields River Road, a roadway that traverses through Custer Gallatin National Forest and the Shields River drainage a tributary of the Yellowstone River.
A 2019 Preliminary Engineering Report funded through a FLAP planning grant informed the scope of the project. Following FLAP funding for project design and construction, a cost verification was completed and project limits were refined due to construction cost increases.
In preparation for the construction of the FLAP project, Park County completed roadway milling work along Shields River Road in summer 2023.
Project Goal/Description:
The primary goal of the project is pavement rehabilitation from MP 0 to MP 13.5 of Shields River Road. The project limits of MP 0 to MP 13.5 were determined following FLAP award to fit within available FLAP funding. Also, including guardrail, replacing traffic signage, and pavement marking.
