June Construction Progress Update
The Blue Lake Road improvement project is upgrading the roadway through reconstruction, fresh paving, drainage improvements, and new guardrails and cattle guards. Running from late February to October 2026, the project is over halfway through its scheduled timeline (56%) with roughly 27% of the total work completed. In June 2026, crews replaced drainage pipes, installed new water inlets and cattle guards, prepped approach roads, finished a rebuilt section with an aggregate base and stone-lined ditch, verified rock sizes at the quarry, and began the initial Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR). Looking ahead to July 2026, the work will focus on strengthening the recycled road base with cement, laying asphalt test strips, and starting full paving operations.

Project Description
Modoc County Road 258 (Blue Lake Road) is the primary access to the Modoc National Forest and the South Warner Wilderness Area from U.S. Route 395 at Likely, California. The purpose of this project is to address deteriorating pavement and unsafe conditions along Blue Lake Road. The project scope will improve 5.7 miles using a 3R process (pulverize and pave) along Blue Lake Road, beginning approximately 0.9 mile south of the intersection with County Road 64 (CR 64) and ending at the Blue Lake Campground / South Warner Road intersection. Campground Road will also receive 3R treatment (pulverize and pave) up to the campground loop road. The typical roadway section will consist of two 9-foot travel lanes and two 1-foot shoulders.
