Highway Engineering and Traffic Safety (CVE5124)

This course is to provide an overview of highway engineering from programming through design to construction, as well as safety factors controlling the highway infrastructure design. Discussions include design characteristics and standards, surveying and mapping, geometric design, earthwork, drainage, legal and environmental considerations. Analysis of both macroscale and microscale safety factors will be covered. A term project will be done by students with either independent work or team work aiming a local safety problem that has been identified by Ohio Department of Transportation or local public works. View course on website

Transportation Infrastructure Engineering (CVE2004)

This course is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in an overview of the current practices, technologies and scientific principles applied to surface transportation systems. Traffic engineering concerns the planning, design, operation, control, and management of roadways and their networks to provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods. This course will introduce the fundamentals of traffic engineering, control and design, highway safety, as well as basics of intelligent transportation systems and environmental impact of transportation activities and operations. Transportation Planning and System Evaluation (CVE6008)

This course is designated to aid students in better understanding all the factors (tangible and intangible) involved in evaluating alternative transportation actions and plans. It is also to broaden students' knowledge and awareness beyond merely technical considerations to include community interaction and involvement and social, environmental and economic issues. The content includes methods of alternative analysis of transportation systems; discussion of current federally mandated studies such as MIS corridor evaluations; analysis of user costs; travel time value and safety improvements; benefit-cost and cost-effectiveness analyses; community concerns and environmental impact analyses; use of multimodal systems for balanced transportation. View course on website

Active Transportation CY PLAN 216

Covers pedestrian and bicycle transportation planning including benefits of active transportation, importance of urban design and network connectivity, and facility design. Examines policies and programs to support active transportation and the processes to create, implement, and evaluate bicycle and pedestrian plans. Includes methods to assess bicycle and pedestrian safety and access.

Traffic Safety and Injury Control (C265)

This course applies principles of engineering, behavioral science, and vision science to preventing traffic collisions and subsequent injury. A systematic approach to traffic safety will be presented in the course, and will include (1) human behavior, vehicle design, and roadway design as interacting approaches to preventing traffic crashes and (2) vehicle and roadway designs as approaches to preventing injury once a collision has occurred. Transportation Management Systems (CVEG 5483)

Six transportation management systems are explored: pavement, bridge, intermodal, public transportation, safety, and congestion. System approaches are presented. Techniques are introduced on how to optimally allocate resources. Pavement and bridge structure basics are discussed and their performance parameters are presented.
