AERMOD Versus CALINE--A Comparative Performance Evaluation

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-17-0038
Project Abstract:

Dispersion models have long been used by air agencies, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and State and local transportation and metropolitan planning agencies for characterizing ambient air-quality impacts due to onroad mobile sources. The objectives of this study include: 1) review of transportation project-specific modeling procedures to ensure consistency with transition to AERMOD; and 2) additional evaluation of near roadway comparative model performance beyond that performed to date by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This study examines current application practices and guidance from EPA and others for the AERMOD model as well as using past guidance for CALINE3 (specifically) applications. The intent is to perform a model comparison of each model to field data and test the performance of current versions of AERMOD versus CALINE3 for roadway sources.

Fiscal Year / AMRP Program / AMRP Activity:
  • FY 2002-2022 / Planning, Environment, and Realty / Modeling and Analysis Tools
FHWA Activity:
  • Analysis, Modeling, and Simulation
Project Outputs:

Statistical analysis and evaluation of model performance of each model against the measured ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations, compare AERMOD versus CALINE3 model performance, and discern the best performing version of AERMOD while considering the practical aspects of roadway characterization and setup. A secondary objective will be to determine the performance of the models in replicating the concentration gradients.

Project Outcomes/Impact:

Analysis to assist staff in discerning the impacts of modeling application and changes to models on transportation practitioners.
