Michigan Division Overview
The Federal Highway Administration - Michigan Division is located in Lansing, Michigan, the State capital and heart of the lower-peninsula. Michigan is a geographically large and diverse state consisting of large urbanized areas in the Southern portion to very remote and rural areas in the Northern lower-peninsula and the upper-peninsula. In 2024, Michigan had the 10th largest population in the United States with the vast majority residing in the lower peninsula (U.S. Census). The Division Office is located within two blocks of our primary customer, the Michigan Department of Transportation and within a 2-3 hour drive of most of the major Metropolitan Planning Organizations it regularly serves.
Michigan's transportation network is vital not only to the citizens of Michigan, but also to the nation and the world. Canada has long been a top trading partner for the United States, accounting for approximately $760 billion of the United States' total trade in 2024 (U.S. Census). The Ambassador Bridge, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and soon to be completed Gordie Howe International Bridge in Detroit, the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, and the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie are the State's major border crossings into Canada.
The Division Office is structured into three primary teams: Office of the Division Administrator (HDA-MI), Engineering and Operations Team (EO) and the Program Development Team (PD). The Office of the Division Administrator manages customer services and administrative support services, including executive leadership, program support, and improvement. The EO team delivers the Federal-aid highway program through project level oversight, as well as program level oversight of bridges, pavements and materials, design, major projects, emergency relief, etc. The PD team manages environmental, financial and civil rights programs. The PD team is also responsible for oversight and advancement of planning, air quality, safety, right-of-way, environmental, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and their operations.
