Welcome to the FHWA Kansas Division
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Division Offices are local field offices that provide leadership, guidance, and direction to State Departments of Transportation in the project development and delivery of transportation projects. Working collaboratively with State partners, FHWA Division Offices ensure that the nation's roads, bridges and tunnels are safe and continue to support economic growth. Additionally, to ensure accountability, the FHWA Division Offices work with the State to develop, track and analyze activities and recommend innovative techniques and strategies to improve the performance of the transportation system. FHWA and its Division Offices are responsible for working with State Departments of Transportation to ensure that the nation's strategic investments preserve and modernize the U.S. highway system - and ultimately to save lives.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) was established in 1967 as one of the operating administrations of the Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT). The Agency has been in existence since 1893, and prior to 1967 was known by other names such as the Office of Road Inquiry and the Bureau of Public Roads. Through the years our name has changed, but our dedication to transportation in America has remained the same. It is FHWA's mission to enhance mobility through innovation, leadership, and public service.
The current organizational structure of the Agency consists of the Washington, D.C. Office (headquarters), a Resource Center (four geographical locations), 52 Division Offices, four Metropolitan Offices and three Federal Lands Highway Division Offices. For more on the origin, history, or organizational structure of the FHWA, visit the "About FHWA" link on the FHWA website.
The Kansas Division Office represents FHWA in the Sunflower State, administering the federal-aid highway program. The Division staff work in close partnership with the Kansas Department of Transportation, Tribal governments, and the many other local government transportation organizations.
