Replace Ghiglione Bridge
Project Description
Spanning a large drainage channel at mile 42 of Denali Park Road, the Ghiglione Bridge has been deemed seismically deficient and identified for retrofitting or replacement. After careful analysis, FHWA determined that the cost to retrofit the existing bridge was nearly as much as it was to replace it. Eliminating the bridge and replacing it with a large culvert crossing was identified in the Value Analysis process as the most economically affordable option, but park management decided there is more value in constructing the new bridge upstream in a manner that will be consistent with the cultural landscape.

Scope of Work
- The proposed project includes the following:
- Routing the park road upstream and onto the original 1930 s park road alignment for use as a bypass during the project;
- Constructing a bridge in the drainage channel approximately seventy to one hundred feet upstream of the existing bridge and;
- Excavating the eastern and western approach ridge noses to meet corner radius standards. Material from the existing approaches would also be used as fill as it is reclaimed as the road is realigned to the north and narrowed to meet road design standards.
