Roadway visibility refers to the visibility of the users of the transportation system (e.g., through providing lighting) and visibility of the surrounding infrastructure (e.g., visibility of signs and pavement markings). Enhanced visibility can improve driver detection and reaction times, when responding to traffic control devices (TCDs) or other road users, and can reduce visual demands of the driver.
Complete Streets prioritizes safety for all users of the transportation system by planning, designing, and operating streets in a way that minimizes or eliminates the chances of serious injuries and fatalities and makes users feel safe. The Complete Streets initiative identifies challenges and opportunities to expand the implementation of Complete Streets.

The AMS Program researches and evaluates the potential impacts of prominent connected and automated vehicle applications. Projects in this area collect robust, real-world datasets, develop AMS tools and methodologies that capture the behavior of connected and automated technologies in traffic, and conduct case studies to better understand the real-world impacts of connected and automated vehicles.
Development of an Analysis, Modeling, and Simulation Framework for V2I and Connected/Automated Vehicle Environment
The primary mission of the Roadway Geometric Design and Safety Research is to support the FHWA Office of Safety Research & Development by conducting research on the geometric design of roadways and its effects on safety.
Analysis, modeling, and simulation (AMS) is a core competency in the field of transportation engineering, enabling engineers to safely test strategies and technologies prior to field deployment. AMS can be a critical element in decisionmaking in an increasingly complex, dynamic transportation system, particularly with new questions arising regarding the impact of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) and the new possibilities for traffic management powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
