At a time when concerns are being expressed about the next generation of transportation professionals, the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program (DDETFP) has been providing opportunities for new talent to enter the transportation workforce.
Almost everyone in the transportation community is very familiar with the year 2000 problem, or "Y2K." Computer systems around the world have been tested, and many Y2K-related problems have been identified and repaired.
Traffic engineers in Des Moines, Iowa, had a problem. A freeway diamond interchange built to accommodate modest traffic flows apparently was no longer working.
As we close out the 20th century, it is interesting to look back to near the beginning of the century and see that while circumstances are different now, the basic problems of highway officials and engineers are strikingly similar.
We're still learning the variety of valuable ways that we can use the Internet. Yet, as wonderful as the prospect of global communication is and as excited as we are to have high bandwidth at our desktops, the Internet's ultimate value to us will be measured in how well we can integrate it into our business process.
