The Highway Safety Information System (HSIS) is a cooperative endeavor funded by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, with data voluntarily provided to FHWA by the participating States.

HSIS is a roadway-based system that provides quality data on a large number of crash, roadway, and traffic variables. It uses data already being collected by States for managing the highway system and studying highway safety. The data are acquired annually from a select group of States, processed into a common computer format, documented, and prepared for analysis. Data are available to requestors in multiple formats including comma-separated values (.csv), Microsoft Excel, SAS, and GIS shape files.

The system is designed to provide data to be used in research conducted in the general public interest, which is intended for publication in a scientific journal or other national publication. By submitting this request, the user is promising to follow these guidelines. Educators who wish to use HSIS data for instructional purposes in a road safety course should contact HSIS staff directly at Users wishing to obtain data for purposes other than research or instruction should contact the States directly. HSIS staff will be pleased to provide contact names and addresses.
