Shear Behavior of Lightweight High-Performance Concrete Girders

Project Abstract: 

Recently, more emphasis has been placed on the use of lightweight or specified density concrete as a solution for several bridge applications. The properties of these materials result in applications that have lighter transportation loads, require smaller construction equipment, result in extended span ranges and reduced inertia forces. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials specifications for designing with these materials have not been significantly updated since the 1960s. This work, along with the work of National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 18-15, intends to update the specifications appropriately for the modern version of these materials.


This project will develop recommended specification revisions for shear design of lightweight high-performance concrete beams and girders in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications.
