FHWA Dispersion Modeling Research

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-19-0045
Project Abstract:

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) undertook an initiative to research a new near road dispersion model (i.e., the FHWA Model). In January 2020, the Volpe Center (Volpe) began the Dispersion Modeling Research project to evaluate both the FHWA Model and Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) regulatory model, AERMOD, against measurements from near-roadway tracer studies. The objective of this work is to understand the strengths and limitations of both models in a near-road environment when used for highway sources. FHWA has been in consultation with EPA to share results of the work.

  • Analysis, Modeling, and Simulation
Project Outputs:
  • Technical reports and performance evaluation report.
  • Research paper (preparing for technical journal publication).
Project Outcomes/Impact:

The performance evaluation results of  the FHWA developed air quality dispersion model will help demonstrate if it could be a possible alternative approach to conduct dispersion modeling for highway projects.
