Project Details

Project Description:

The objective of the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) project ("Evaluation of Bicycle and Pedestrian Engineering Countermeasures") was to quantify the effectiveness of medium- to low-cost pedestrian engineering countermeasures. The project focused on existing and new engineering countermeasures for pedestrians and bicyclists that have not yet been comprehensively evaluated.

Goals

The key project objective was to quantify the effectiveness of pedestrian evaluation countermeasures: the High intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) beacon, the rectangular rapid-flashing beacon, shared lane markings, three crosswalk marking patterns, and an evaluation methods guide.
