Project Abstract: 

This research study will identify/develop a combination of nondestructive and destructive methods to evaluate the present and future concrete deterioration for field concrete structures affected by alkali-silica reactivity (ASR). The research will also identify procedures and materials to rehabilitate concrete structures' deterioration due to the presence of ASR to extend their service life.

Goals

The key project objectives are to:

  • Develop nondestructive field test methods to evaluate concrete structures for presence of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR), estimate deterioration rate, and predict total expansion.
  • Develop cost-effective methods to control alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) and extend the service life of existing highway structures.
