Development of a Combined Structural and Environmental Loading Facility for the Determination of the Long-Term Performance of Bridge Decks
Project Information
The deterioration of bridge decks is of significant concern to Department of Transportations (DOTs) around the country. Many factors, both structural and environmental, play a role in this deterioration. Studies have been completed that focus on monitoring the in-service behavior of concrete bridge decks, but this type of research is limited in its ability to control the loads applied to the structure. This research program is focused on constructing a controlled facility wherein full-scale truck loadings and full-range environmental loadings can be simultaneously and continuously applied to bridge decks. Through this facility, researchers will be able to quantify the variables that have the greatest impact on the service life of the bridge.
