A new $400,000 Federal Highway Administration grant will help replace the two-lane I-84 bridge over the Lime Interchange and Union Pacific Railroad in Baker County, OR, said U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta.

"I-84 provides a vital link for Baker County residents and economy," said Secretary Mineta. "We must invest today in capacity so the road can handle the growing traffic our economy is generating."

The I-84 bridge, built 40 years ago, carries 7,700 vehicles per day but is expected carry more than 16,000 per day in the next 15 years. The project is expected to be completed in less than three years.

"As our economy drives forward, the Bush Administration supports projects like this that protect motorists while promoting economic growth in America's hometowns," said Federal Highway Administrator Mary E. Peters.

Since 1991, the FHWA has provided funds to states seeking to improve the safety, longevity or utility of key bridges with innovative materials or designs.
