Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) FAQs: Downloading and Installing
The following FAQs will help you to download and install the IHSDM software.
The current release of IHSDM software may be downloaded free of charge through the Software Download page.
You can install the IHSDM 2021 Release (version 17.0.0; September 2021) over 2011 and later versions of IHSDM. You should not install the IHSDM 2021 Release over versions from before 2011. To access your 2010/2009/2008 Release Projects, first Archive the Projects in the old Release, and then Un-Archive the Projects in the 2021 Release.
Visit the Software Download page, and click on the Downloading and Installing IHSDM link at the bottom of the page for the necessary system requirements and instructions for users to successfully download and deploy this software.
The distribution file is packaged as a ZIP file (ihsdm_17_0_0_full.zip), and contains a fully-installed version of IHSDM, including:
- A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from OpenJDK (version 1.8.0)
- All IHSDM files required to run the Policy Review, Crash Prediction, Design Consistency, Traffic Analysis and Driver/Vehicle Modules
- .chm-based documentation
- Sample highway files
- A GEOPAK-to-IHSDM data extractor, for use with GEOPAK 2001, 2000 and 98.
Once the distribution (ZIP) file has been downloaded to your computer, simply copy the expanded/extracted contents (i.e., the IHSDM2021 folder) to whatever location you wish to run IHSDM from. For example, if you wish to run IHSDM from the C:\ folder, just copy the IHSDM2021 folder and its contents to C:\.
After the software has been installed on your computer, users may start IHSDM in the following ways:
- Double-click on the ihsdm.exe file in Windows Explorer to open a 32-bit version of IHSDM, or double-click on the ihsdm64.exe file to open a 64-bit version of IHSDM.
- Right-click on the ihsdm.exe file or ihsdm64.exe file and select “Send to...Desktop (create Shortcut)” or “Pin to Start” or “Pin to taskbar” for quick access in the future.
Currently, IHSDM is available for the recent different versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. The supported versions of Windows Intel IA32 include:
- Windows 10.
- Windows 7.
Supported versions of Windows x64 include:
- Windows 10.
- Windows 7.
Most IHSDM development and testing was done in a x64 and IA32 Windows 10 environments.
Note: The software development team did not test IHSDM version 17.0.0 on Windows 8, but the expectation is that it will run successfully.
IHSDM is implemented in the Java programming language, and in theory, is portable to operating systems supporting a Java 8 virtual machine. Some testing of IHSDM was done on Linux using the Sun Linux Java Runtime Environment, however there is no distribution of IHSDM for Linux or any other operating system because of a lack of demand.
