R&T Portfolio: Federal Lands
Twenty-eight percent of land in the United States is under Federal stewardship, including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and Tribal and other federally owned lands. Developing, constructing, and maintaining the transportation networks in these often rural and remote areas pose unique challenges for Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) Federal Lands Highway (FLH) Divisions serving the western, central, and eastern regions of the Nation. However, by improving safety and access to Federal and Tribal lands, FHWA ensures that the many national treasures within Federal Lands can be enjoyed by all.
FLH helps Federal agencies and Tribal governments improve safety, maintain infrastructure assets, streamline the environmental review process, and deploy innovation and research, all while being accountable to its partners. FLH optimizes the Office of Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) program by serving as test beds for innovation used by State and local highway agencies on their rural roads.
