R&T Portfolio: Corporate Research and Partnerships
The Office of Corporate Research, Technology, and Innovation Management supports the entire agency and employees at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) with research infrastructure, management of the Agency’s research portfolio, and publication of research outcomes. Additionally, the office houses the Exploratory Advanced Research (EAR) Program supports longer term, higher risk research projects across all FHWA research areas. The office also houses the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which supports research and development at small businesses to develop products which could be commercialized and have positive impacts on the transportation system.
Corporate Research Activities
Every year, the EAR Program conducts extensive investigations into 15 to 20 topics to identify three or four where a Government investment has the potential to achieve higher impact results. Similarly, the SBIR program solicits applications for two to five topics for preliminary research each year, and further develops promising projects by offering commercialization assistance and Phase II funding.
