R&T Portfolio: Accelerated Innovation Deployment
The Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration Program provides funding to State departments of transportation (DOTs), Federal land management agencies, and Tribal Governments to accelerate the implementation and adoption of proven innovative technologies. Metropolitan planning organizations and local governments may apply through the State DOT as subrecipients. The AID Demonstration funds offset risks often associated with early deployment. Project activities may involve any phase of a highway transportation project from project planning through project delivery, including planning, financing, operation, structures, materials, pavements, environment, and construction that eligible for assistance under title 23, U.S.C. Awards may be up to the full cost to deploy the innovation up to a maximum of $1 million. funding support can be used to cover the full cost of implementation and offset the risks associated with early deployment of innovative technologies.
Program Objectives:
- Accelerate the deployment and adoption of proven innovative practices and technologies.
- Encourage widespread adoption of transportation innovations through technology transfer.
The AID Demonstration Program provides incentive funding for eligible entities to accelerate the implementation and adoption of innovation in highway transportation.
Spotlight Project: Diverging Diamond Interchange
The diverging diamond interchange was first featured in Every Day Counts (EDC)-2 as an example of an intersection and interchange geometric innovation. The design eliminates the signalized left-turn phase within interchanges by shifting the crossroad traffic to the left side of the roadway between ramp terminals. Since the 2013–14 EDC round, the AID Demonstration Program has funded an additional four Diverging Diamond Interchanges in Delaware, Maine, Michigan, and Oklahoma.
