Research Associateship Programs
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Research Associateship Program recommends awards to outstanding scientists and engineers as guest researchers at participating Federal laboratories. The objectives of the research associateship programs are to (1) provide postdoctoral and senior scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability opportunities for research on problems, largely of their own choice, that are compatible with the interests of the sponsoring laboratories; and (2) contribute to the overall efforts of the laboratories. For recent doctoral graduates, the research associateship programs provide an opportunity for concentrated research in association with selected members of the permanent professional laboratory staff. American Association for the Advancement of Science
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people. Made up of more than 120,000 individual members in more than 91 countries, AAAS is the world's largest multidisciplinary scientific society.
American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Special Committee on Research and Innovation (R&I), supports AASHTO and the transportation community by delivering strategic, high-quality research results while addressing development, technology transfer, and implementation. AASHTO's Research Advisory Committee supports the activities of R&I and is committed to being proactive in promoting quality and excellence in research and in the application of research findings to improve State transportation systems.
National Cooperative Highway Research Program
The National Cooperative Highway Research Program Highway Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) Program funds research into promising but unproven innovations for highways. The Highway IDEA program seeks proposals with potential to advance the construction, safety, maintenance, and management of highway systems.
Transportation Research Board Research and Technology Coordinating Committee
The TRB Research and Technology Coordinating Committee reviews highway research programs and activities, providing independent assessments of research opportunities and priority recommendations from which FHWA and other research organizations can draw in developing their research programs.

European Conference of Transport Research Institutes
The European Conference of Transport Research Institutes (ECTRI) is an international, nonprofit organization that was founded in April 2003. Its members are 20 major transport research institutes or universities from European countries. Together, they account for more than 3,000 European scientific and research staff in the field of transport. ECTRI’s aim is to help build the “European Research Area” in surface transport by cooperation in thematic and process-oriented working groups, task forces, Framework Programme projects, and seminars.
Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories
Formed in 1989, the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) is a registered international association with a permanent secretariat based in Brussels and governed by the directors of each of the national institutes. It provides a coordinated structure for the interests of the 29 national research and technical centers from the member states in the European Union, the European Free Trade Association countries, and the rest of Europe. FEHRL is engaged in road engineering research topics including safety, materials, environmental issues, telematics, and economic evaluation. Research capacity is provided by the national institutes and makes use of the wide range of test facilities available to them.
