Publication Information

Publication Type:
Summary Report

FHWA-RD-94-068
Abstract:

Crashes involving passing maneuvers are an important safety issue on two-lane rural roads. HSIS data from 3 states were used in this study. Passing crashes comprised 1.3 percent of all crashes on two-lane roads, and 2.0 percent of all crashes on two-lane rural roads. Passing crashes were somewhat more severe than non-passing crashes. In two of the states, only 6.4 to 6.7 percent of passing crashes were head-on; the third state did not list head-on as a separate crash type.
