Optimal Binder Selection for High-Level Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Mixes

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-09-0057
Project Abstract:

Conduct binder and mix testing to evaluate blending of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and virgin binder.

Goals

The key project objective is to better understand blending of RAP/virgin asphalt binders. The current state of the practice is based on the assumption that complete blending occurs between the RAP and virgin binder. The hypothesis of this study is that complete blending does not occur; however, complete blending may not be necessary for proper performance in asphalt mixtures.
