Modeling Chloride Accumulation in Streams from Winter Road Salt Application for Federal Compliance
Project Information
This study is to evaluate and adjust Oregon Department of Transportation's (ODOT’s) Winter Salt Pilot project data collection methods to provide useful data for accurate predictions of surface chloride transport using the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model (SELDM) for development into a framework that can be applied for magnesium chloride (MgCl2) or sodium chloride (NaCl) application in any watershed. SELDM model results will be analyzed, including probability of exceeding water quality standards in a given year, and the effect of using best management practices (BMPs) such as hydrograph extension to mitigation of chloride. The preliminary degree of groundwater infiltration at Site 1 will be determined and SELDM mass balance together with these physical results will be used to determine if further study is needed to include chloride groundwater contributions for modeling stream exceedances.
